She rumbles like a herd of bison with bronchitis and revs up like she's getting ready to catapult to Mars. Her intestines and various tummies connect to holes in the boat belly which take in cooling saltwater and squirt out used up hot water, not to mention exhaust (she is a gassy little thing!). She's a universal diesel engine, and she brings Drakka to life. Guts are a notoriously troublesome aspect of caring for a sea dragon, and Little Penny will soon prove to be no exception. Colors that appear blue are surprisingly beige, while shades that seem bright are actually subdued. As we mixed our oil paint, we splotched it directly onto this piece of paper for comparison. This project began just before Covid-19 smacked the nation. We were in lockdown with a baby & toddler, while my partner did grad school online, and I eeked out an income during the day. This book was made while the boogerballs slept. My inspiration for the content was everything I wish I’d had as a parent. Visually, our garden was the inspiration for the illustrations. We have a tiny yard with raised beds, and most of the paintings were done from life: Birth of a baby mimics the growth of a garden.
